=== The Tragic Tale of Louiza Fox === The ghost of Louiza Catherine Fox is said to haunt the rural Egypt Valley area near Barnesville. Louiza, a 13-year-old housemaid, was murdered by Thomas Carr, a 22-year-old coal miner and former Union soldier, on January 21, 1869. Carr ambushed her as she walked home from work, stabbing her to death. Carr was soon apprehended after a failed suicide attempt and confessed to Fox’s murder and several others. He was executed by hanging—the only legal execution in Belmont County history. Reports claim that Louiza’s spirit appears near the site of her murder, often described as a weeping figure, and that Carr’s ghost is also seen in the vicinity. Louiza’s grave is located in nearby Salem Cemetery, where some visitors report hearing cries or sensing unease.
